Species Description
Heavy triangular bill distinctive, forming wedge-shaped head. Female shows two distinct pale patches on face, the forward patch tall and narrow. Adult male has a multicolored bill and two bright white head patches.
Species Habitat
Common along Pacific coast; uncommon to rare inland. Nests on the ground near ponds, often under low branches of spruce trees.
Species Range
Migratory. Breeds in northern Canada and Alaska and winters along the east and west coasts of North America.
