Small size, stocky angular shape, relatively short-tailed, broad wings and overall dark color distinctive. Wingtips do not reach tail tip when perched. Dark tail is crossed by narrow whitish bands. Face shows weak mustache compared to American Kestrel.

Uncommon in open habitats. Nests in trees in forests with open areas.

Migratory. Breeds throughout the northern forests and prairies of North America, Europe, and Asia. Winters in most regions in the US and Central America.
