Species Description
A small duck with relatively large and round head. Breeding male has white patch on black head. Female gray-brown with obvious oval white patch on cheek.
Species Habitat
Common on lakes, harbors, and bays. Nests in tree cavities near ponds and rivers.
Species Range
Migratory. Confined as a breeder to the boreal forest and aspen park-land of North America. In winter, primarily found along coastal US and Mexico.
