Dominant class of annelids in the marine environment. Numerous, diverse, almost entirely marine, and often constitute a major component of benthic communities. In free-living forms, the body is generally elongated with numerous segments and the heads are exceedingly diverse. Tube-dwelling polychaetes depart widely from the body form of predatory types.
