Dark gray above, broad dark mask over eyes, stubby bill, black wings and tail with white markings visible mostly in flight.

Uncommon and declining in open pastures and prairies with scattered bushes, hedgerows, and trees.

Occurs exclusively in North America. Throughout most of the southern part of its range, the Loggerhead Shrike is a year-round resident; northern populations are migratory.
