Note overall dark brown color and cinnamon markings on face, but only faint streaking across breast and throat. Rufous undertail coverts are often visible.

Common in relatively open, arid areas with patches of brush.

Year-round resident from southern Oregon south throughout most of the upper and lower Sonoran zones of California to the tropical tip of Baja California.
