Small-sized rail. Short, stout yellow bill and dark face with cryptic pattern and clear buffy undertail coverts distinctive.

Common to uncommon in wet marshes, mainly with grassy vegetation. Often walks out along edges of vegetation and can be seen there feeding in the open.

Migratory. Breeds in much of Canada and northern United States. Winters along southern Pacific and Atlantic coastlines, throughout Mexico, and Central and South America.
