Species Description
Kelp bass have white or pale rectangular markings over shades of brown or green. Often mottled in various colors. As with other sea basses, the first two dorsal fin spines are shorter than the others. Similar coloration but more mottled than Sebastes serranoides (SESE) especially on head, fins are also lighter in color. Young of year to 7.5 cm and adults to 72 cm.
Species Habitat
Young fish occupy kelp forests, rocky areas and kelp mats. Larger fish tend to be found in deeper water around reefs or over sand. Usually solitary or in very small groups.

Washington to Southern Baja California, Mexico.
